We have an exciting year ahead of us with some great topics to catch the children's interest! Our topics include: 'Through the Ages', 'Scrumdiddlyumptious' and 'Predator'. Your child's love of learning is going to grow over the year and they will take part in a variety of exciting learning opportunities, including: educational visits, internal visitors and learning outdoors.

Summer learning

In English we will be looking at characterising speech in a narrative text. Through this we will be looking at the Greek legend 'Liam vs Athena - the Gorgon quest'. Children will be using what they have learnt to write their own ancient legend. We will then be revisiting the features of a non-chronological report. We will looking at examples all about different creatures from Greek mythology and then moving on to writing our own reports about a creature of their own creations.

In Maths, we will be:

  • Looking at the written method for multiplication.
  • Length - metres, centimetres and millimetres.
  • Equivalent lengths.
  • Fractions.

In Science, the children will be exploring plants. We will be performing experiments to find out what conditions plants need to in order to grow. We will be learning about the different parts of a plant and how plants reproduce.

In Design and Technology we will be learning learning about a range of moving parts and joins. We will be using what we have learnt to create a model of a moving predator.

In Music we will listen to and appraise a song called 'Bringing us together'. We will learn to sing the song and play percussion instruments along to the music. We will develop our understanding of pulse and pitch. We will also be continuing to learn how to play the recorder with Tees Valley Music Service.

In Geography we will be learning all about earthquakes. We will be exploring how earthquakes happen, where in the world earthquakes happen, how earthquakes are measured and how people are affected by earthquakes.

In Computing we will be learning about branching databases and how they are used to organise information. We will then be moving on to learning about simulations. We will look at what they are and what they are used for.

In French we will learn all about French transport. We will be looking at and using language in order to be able to tell our friends how we travel to school in French.

In RE we will be exploring why holy books are important in religion.

In PE we are going to be developing our throwing and jumping skills. We will then use these skills to learn how to perform a range of athletic sports. These include: hammer throw, javelin, shot put, long jump and triple jump.

In our school we explore our rights across all areas of our school through our learning and social times. We make links in our lessons and explain why or how they relate to a certain right.

We also have a ‘Right of the Half Term’. This is where we dedicate time in our week to explore a specific right in detail.
This half term, our focus is Article 32 – Protection from Harmful Work. We will explore how children have the right to be protected from doing work that is dangerous or bad for their education, health or development. If children work, they have the right to be safe and paid fairly.

Important information and reminders:

  • Kidz Konnect will take place on a Tuesday. Please can children come to school wearing weather suitable clothing as most of these sessions will be taking place outside (please note that clothes may get muddy so old clothes would be best!) Wellies would also be advised for wet weather.
  • PE will be taking place on Thursday. Please can children come to school wearing appropriate footwear. They will be getting changed at school into PE kits that have been provided by school.
  • Books will be changed on a Monday each week, please ensure that your child has their book bag in school on this day. Your child will be given a reading for pleasure book to take home and a phonics book suited to their level if they continue to access phonics. Also, please make sure to sign your child's reading record each time you read with them!
