Galileo (Year 1/2)

Welcome to Year 1/2!

Teacher: Miss Bathe

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Simpson

SCITT Student: Miss Peacock/Miss Johnson

Email: RSPGalileo@southbankprimary.co.uk

We have an exciting year ahead of us with some great Theme topics including 'Dinosaur Planet', 'Rio di Vida' and 'Paws, Claws and Whiskers'. In addition, we will enjoy teaching and learning the curriculum in preparation for the Year 1 Phonics Screening and the Year 2 end of year SATs. To support you with this year, below are various resources which can be used to support your child’s learning at home as well as in school.

Reading At Home

Children are expected to bring their book bags into school on a Monday and Friday for books to be changed. They will be given a reading book matched to their Phonic ability that they can reread to build up fluency and a 'Reading for Pleasure' book (with a gold star displayed on the front) for you to read to them.

Please write the date on your child's reading log when they have read. The winning class with the most home readers each week gets to share a hot chocolate and a story with Miss Cooper!

Reminders

  • Children must wear their school uniform everyday, unless it is a PE Day and have a suitable coat for outdoor play. Please ensure you write your child's name inside their uniform.
  • PE is on a Wednesday. Your child should come to school wearing their PE kit. PE kits consist of black leggings/joggers, a white t-shirt, a jacket and suitable shoes for outdoor sessions.
  • Until 20th March, Galileo class will be participating in a Yoga session on a Monday afternoon. Your child should come to school wearing their PE kit on this day.

Phonics and Reading

The Year 1 Phonics Screening will take place the week of Monday 12th June. Year 2 children who did not pass the Phonics Screening in Year 1 will also be resitting the phonics screening check during this period.

Your child has made super progress in their reading this year. Let’s keep them reading this half-term for maximum success in the Phonics Screening Check and their reading.

Things to support your child's Phonics and Reading:

  • Look at the 'Helping your child with Phonics' information pack below to find out how we teach Phonics and the resources we use.
  • Listen to your child read the book bag books sent home and the eBooks that they have been allocated on www.oxfordowl.co.uk. New login cards can be requested from the school office.
  • Using the Virtual Classroom links provided to the children, scan the QR codes so that children can practise the sounds they have been learning in school.
